Review: Nokia E63
The E series from Nokia give a tough competition to Nokia E71 business phone. The Nokia E63 is cheaper then E71. While there are some design and feature differences between the two, the latter is definitely excellent value for money. The Nokia E63 has been announced in November 2008 and was made available in December 2008 in the market. In terms of price, E63 is available at USD $250. The phone is available in two colors: Ultramarine Blue and Ruby Red.
Design and Display
Nokia N63 is not looking so cool and keeps the same 'pie' form line. The mobile phone measure 113mm x 59mm x 13 mm and weighs 126 g with battery. The front part of the E63 bar smartphone is made from a shiny plastic, with nice finishes, the backside has a rubberized plastic that helps the phone grip better in your hand.
The Nokia E63 has 2.4" TFT display, so half of the phone's front part is covered by the display part. Above the display, there is an in-call speaker and small ambient light sensor. Below the screen, you find the full QWERTY keyboard. The layout of the keyboard is much the same with E71s with some minor exceptions. The Space bar key size has been reduced to make room for two more keys: Ctrl key and Parenthesis key. Furthermore, the Space bar key features a flashlight icon, which means that every time you keep it pressed, you'll be able to use the LED flash of the phone as a flashlight. On the left side, there is a microUSB port and the microSD card slot. On th top side there is a 3.5mm jack for headphone and the loudspeaker. On the back side of the phone, you fine one 2 Megapixel camera that features flash and self-portrait mirror. The charger port has been placed on the bottom side of the device.
In terms of display, Nokia E63 features a 2.4" QVGA TFT display supporting 16 million colors with 320 x 240 pixels resolution. Colors, contrast, as well as quality of the image displayed are very good. It also keeps the high standard quality, and that includes excellent eligibility under bright sunlight.
Since Nokia E63 is a business phone, it has not good quality of camera. The phone features 2 MegaPixel camera with 1600 x 1200 pixels resolution. You can save the still pictures in JPEG/Exif formats. The camera has a LED flash with Automatic, Off and Forced mode and digital zoom facility.
The preview of pictures is not full screen. You can only modify White balance (Automatic, Sunny, Incandescent, Fluorescent) and Color tone (Normal, Sepia, Black & white, Negative).
You can also record videos with 15 frame per second and 320 x 240 pixels resolution, but the video quality is very poor. The maximum clip length you can record is only 1 hour. You can change the scene mode (automatic, night) while recording the video. Also you can record an audio with this phone.
Nokia E63 is a quad-band GSM (850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900) handset which features GPRS class 32 (maximum speed 100/60 kbps - DL/UL), EDGE 32 class (maximum speed 296/177.6 kbps - DL/UL), WCDMA 900/2100 or 850/1900 or 850/2100 with maximum speed 384/384 kbps (DL/UL), High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HSCSD) with speed of 57.6 kbps, CSD and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g. Tested on the EDGE and 3G networks, the phone has performed pretty good.
The WiFi works pretty well in the phone and the phone features WEP, 802.1X, WPA and WPA2 Wireless LAN security, support for TCP/IP protocol and IETF SIP and 3GPP.
Other connectivity tools include Bluetooth 2.0 with DUN, OPP, FTP, HFP, GOEP, HSP, BIP, RSAP, GAVDP, AVRCP, A2DP support and microUSB for PC synchronization. The phone features MTP (Multimedia Transfer Protocol) support, Network (Raw), Direct TCP/IP socket connection to any specified port (a.k.a HP JetDirect), Network (LPR), Line Printer Daemon protocol (RFC1179) and support for local and remote SyncML synchronization, iSync, Intellisync, ActiveSync.
The Nokia N78 is quad-band network compatible handset has a very good GSM signal reception. It is compatible with GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800 and GSM1900 networks. The UMTS signal reception is also excellent. The available WCDMA network bands are 900 / 2100. It provides automatic switching between GSM bands.
The Nokia E63 offers a complete messaging solution. With the full QWERTY keypad, it's a very easy to write text or edit documents. The phone includes four message editors. The E63 supports SMS, MMS, audio message and e-mail. This phone also supports IMAP, Mail for Exchange, POP and SMTP protocol, and supports more than one email account, so you can send or receive the emails on the phone. Also, it can download headers or full email, and supports attachments. Also, the phone features IMAP IDLE support, Integrated Nokia Mobile VPN and support for Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email.
Processor and Memory
Nokia E63 is powered by the same single ARM11 family processor running at speeds of up to 369 Mhz that has been included with the E71 model.
Nokia E63 has 110 MB user free internal dynamic memory, 128 MB SDRAM and 256 MB NAND memory. The phone supports microSD storage card upto 8GB.
Entertainment and Multimedia
Nokia E63 is a business phone, so it has not good multimedia features. Music player, media player and FM radio are there, but the sound quality is not so good. The E63 features a 3.5mm jack port, which enables users to insert better headphones and play the music with better sound quality. The integrated music player looks cool and supports music files such as: MP3, AAC, eAAC, AAC+, WMA. The phone also features Nokia Music Manager, support for Nokia Music Store and Nokia Podcasting, music synchronizatiopn with Windows Media Player and Navi wheel.
The integrated FM Radio can record up to 50 base stations and features the Visual Radio functions. Reception is also very good in the phone.
Furthermore, videos can be played with the help of the integrated Real Player application. It supports video recording with MP4, 3gp, H.263, MPEG-4 VSP file formats and video playback with Flash Lite 3, MP4, 3gp, H.263, MPEG-4 VSP file formats.
The 1500 mAh Li-Polymer (BP-4L) battery has an officially standby time of 18 days in GSM and 20 days in WCDMA. The E63 has a talktime upto 11 hours in GSM and upto 4 hrs 40 min in WCDMA while the music playback time is maximum 18 hrs. The E63 can be idle upto 170 hrs.
