Ericsson has entered into an asset purchase agreement to acquire the parts of the Carrier Networks division of Nortel relating to CDMA and LTE technology in North America. The purchase is structured as an asset sale at a cash purchase price of USD 1.13 b. on a cash and debt free basis. This announcement follows the completion of the auction process initiated by Nortel, and the transaction is subject to court and customary regulatory approvals.

Czech Railways has selected Nortel GSM-R technology to provide wireless communications to the 207 km Czech section of the International Railway Corridor IV between Austria and Poland. Nortel partner Kapsch CarrierCom will supply and deploy the network. The project began in June 2009 and is scheduled for completion by end of 2009.
Japanese Research and Development Agency Enters New Generation of Networking with Juniper Core Virtualization Solution
Juniper Networks, Inc., the leader in high-performance networking, announced that Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has achieved a major technological breakthrough by using virtualization to improve the efficiency of its new-generation ultra high-speed test bed research network, JGN2plus, with Juniper's T1600 core routing platform and JCS 1200 control system. Ciena Corporation, the network specialist, announced that MAGPI (Mid-Atlantic Gigapop for Internet2), an Information Systems and Computing organization at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, has implemented a network based on the CN 4200 FlexSelect Advanced Services Platform to support high performance network connectivity among multiple research labs located at Princeton University’s Forrestal Campus and the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Sciences Network 4 (ESnet4), which operates over Internet2’s nationwide infrastructure. ESnet4 provides the DOE with a dynamic and reliable communications infrastructure and leading-edge network services to foster greater scientific collaboration to support the agency’s research projects and goals.
