New iPhone Game: Wolfenstein 3D
Id Software has announced the availability of an open-source port of Wolfenstein 3D for the iPhone. It is available in iTunes App Store. The source code for Wolfenstein 3D has also been released to the public.
Mr. Carmack has created a hardware-optimized version of the classic Wolfenstein 3D. The game first started as a port of the Java cell phone game Wolfenstein RPG, Due to the software rendering inefficiencies, Mr. Carmack took matters into his own hands, finishing code for a hardware-optimized Wolfenstein RPG in only four days, and it was estimated to take a full development team 2 months.
For inspiration, Mr. Carmack turned to the OpenGL port Wolf3D Redux, which would run on modern computers. After a failed attempt to get the maintainer of the project to code the game, he again decided to take matters into his own hands.
Worth to mention, the lead programmer of some of Id's most popular games eventually managed to get Wolfenstein up and running on Apple' handset, noting that “Wolfenstein 3D Classic is non-stop action and all of the memorable enemies are there for you to conquer from Hans Grosse to MechaHitler!” Additional highlights include all six original episodes with 60 classic levels and those unforgettable weapons (remember the brutal chain gun?), as well as the clever new touch controls and tilt controls.
